"Will it fit in a van?" is the wrong question
Nobody plans an over-height load. It arrives as a problem — a machine guard, a shop fitting, a mast, a tank, a stack of frames, a piece of test kit that came off the line taller than the drawing said it would. And the question that gets asked is always "will it fit in a van?"
The questions that actually decide it are different. There are three heights on any vehicle and they are never the same number. There is the external travelling height, which is what meets the bridge. There is the internal roof height, which is what the body will hold. And there is the door aperture — what will physically pass through the opening. The aperture is almost always the smallest of the three, because a roller shutter housing, a header bar and a tail-lift hinge assembly all eat into it.
Plenty of items that would sit happily inside a 7.5-tonne box body will not go through its rear doors standing up. And if your item cannot be laid down — glass, fluids, castors, calibration, a fragile top — the aperture, not the roof, is what chooses the vehicle.
What each vehicle actually gives you
Working from smallest up, the range runs: a Luton with a tail lift, at around six pallets; a 7.5-tonne box at around ten; an 18-tonne box at around fourteen; and a 13.6m articulated trailer at 26 pallets and up to roughly 26,000kg. Each step up buys internal height as well as floor space.
We will not quote you a single internal height per vehicle type, and you should be wary of anyone who does. Body builds vary from one vehicle to the next, and the door aperture always runs lower than the internal roof — sometimes by a little, sometimes by a lot. A figure copied off a brochure is how a load ends up refused at the kerb. Ask us instead, and we will confirm the internal height and the door aperture of the actual vehicle we would send.
The consequence still catches buyers out: a light item that happens to be tall can need a bigger vehicle than its weight suggests, and it needs it for the height, not the payload. You are buying cubic space and an opening, not tonnage. That is not an upsell, it is geometry — and it is far cheaper than a wasted collection and a second attempt.
Curtain-sider or box body: the biggest lever you have
This is the decision that rescues most awkward freight, and most people booking never get asked about it.
A box body has one way in: through the rear doors, on a tail lift or up a ramp. Everything has to clear that aperture. A curtain-sider draws its curtains back along the length of the bed, so a load can go in from the side, at any point along the trailer, by forklift or crane, without ever passing through a door opening. Some specifications add a sliding or removable roof, which lets a tall item be lowered in from above.
For an item that will not go through rear doors upright, that is the difference between "we can move this" and "we can't".
The trade-offs are real. Curtain-siders need proper restraint — internal straps, load bars, load-locking posts — and side loading needs both space at the kerb and lifting equipment at each end. A box body is more secure and more weatherproof. Which one suits you usually depends on what is available at collection and at delivery, so tell us that first and we will spec the vehicle around it.
Measure it properly: five numbers, one photo
Height, width, length, weight, base footprint. Measured on the pallet, skid or frame the item will actually travel on — a machine measured at 2.15m sitting on a 150mm pallet is a 2.30m load, and that distinction has ended more bookings than any other.
Measure to the tallest fixed point, not to the body of the item: eyebolts, handles, aerials, exhaust stacks, castors, feet, crating, shrink-wrap and anything strapped on top. If it is crated, measure the crate. Do not round down to be helpful. Give the real figure and add a little for dunnage and strapping.
Then answer the question engineers and ops staff often disagree on: can it be laid down or tilted? If the answer is no, say so at booking and say why — it changes the vehicle, and it changes how the load is restrained.
And send a photo. A photograph tells a transport planner more in three seconds than a spec sheet does in three minutes, especially about how top-heavy something is and where it can safely be strapped.
Bridges, routes and the two ends of the job
Overall travelling height is the load bed plus the load. That total is what meets the bridge, not the item's own dimension — and it is why a trailer that is fine empty can be a problem loaded.
UK structures with headroom below 16'6" (5.03m) are signed, and the network has a great many of them: railway bridges, canal bridges, tunnels, low canopies. Vehicles travelling above 3m are required to have their travelling height displayed in the cab — a rule that exists precisely because this goes wrong. A loaded artic runs high enough that low-bridge routing is a live constraint on almost every job; a 7.5-tonne box is far lower, but not immune. Routing is our job; the dimensions are yours.
The bigger risk is usually the site, not the road. Height barriers on trading estates and retail car parks are commonly set low enough to stop anything larger than a van reaching the door — read the actual sign, do not assume. Then there are gate widths, turning circles, overhead cables, tree cover, and loading bays set for one trailer height and nothing else. Check both ends: collection points catch people out as often as deliveries do.
Kerbside, tail lift or forklift — be honest about the far end
Kerbside means what it says: the driver delivers to the nearest safe hard standing, one person, at the back of the vehicle. It is not an installation service and it is not a two-person lift. For a tall, top-heavy item, kerbside on its own is rarely enough.
A tail lift takes the weight, and it will take a lot of it — but the platform has a fixed size and a rated capacity, and a tall, top-heavy item on a moving platform is a stability problem before it is a lifting problem. If the footprint is narrow relative to the height, expect the driver to want assistance rather than run it solo.
A forklift is usually the clean answer, but only if two things are true: the item has a genuinely forkable base — pallet, skid or crate with entry channels — and there is a forklift plus a trained operator on site at the time of collection and at the time of delivery. That second half gets forgotten constantly. If it is a crane or hiab job, say so early, because that is booked, not improvised.
Why a dedicated vehicle suits awkward freight better than a network
Over-height freight is exactly what consolidated services are worst at. Network economics depend on standard footprints, stackable heights and re-handling at hub. Anything tall, unstackable or oddly shaped tends to attract a surcharge or a refusal — or, worse, gets accepted, tipped, cross-docked and stacked on.

What to tell us at booking — and the honest part
Have these ready and the booking takes minutes: height, width, length and weight of the largest item, measured on its pallet to the tallest fixed point; whether it can be laid down or tilted; how it is packaged and whether the base is forkable; what lifting equipment and trained operator exist at collection and at delivery; access at both ends, including height barriers, gate widths and yard space; any restriction you already know about on the route; and a photo.
Now the honest part. If the numbers do not work, we will tell you at booking. If the vehicle you have asked for cannot physically take the item, or a curtain-sider cannot get into your yard past the gate, you will hear it before anything is dispatched — not after it arrives and cannot load. A clear "no, but here is what will work" first thing in the morning is a far better day than a wasted collection in the afternoon.
