Three modes, three very different machines
Strip out the jargon and the three options differ on three things: how many times your freight is handled, whose schedule it travels on, and whether you are buying space or buying a vehicle.
A pallet network sells you space on other operators' vehicles, moving through a central hub on the network's timetable. A part load sells you space on one vehicle shared with other consignments, running a route built around everybody's drops, not just yours. A dedicated full load sells you the vehicle: your consignment only, collected from your door and driven straight to the consignee.
Everything else — price, transit time, damage exposure, how precisely you can predict arrival — falls out of those three answers.
Most buyers come unstuck by choosing on unit price, because unit price is the one number that tells you nothing about when the freight lands. Settle the question that actually bites first: does this delivery have a hard deadline behind it? A line stoppage, a pour, a planned shutdown, an AOG aircraft, a site that shuts its gates at 16:00. Let that answer pick the mode. Do it the other way round and you spend the afternoon defending a cheap booking that missed.
What actually happens inside a pallet network
Pallet networks are hub-and-spoke systems, and they are very good at what they are designed to do. A member operator collects your pallet locally and takes it back to their own depot. That evening it is trunked to a central hub. Overnight, the hub sorts pallets by destination postcode. Yours is re-trunked out to the member operator covering the delivery area, who puts it on a local multi-drop round the following day.
Count the handling: collection, member depot, hub inbound, sort, hub outbound, delivery depot, delivery vehicle. Your pallet is lifted, scanned and moved six or seven times — and it spends most of its transit standing still.
That mechanic produces genuinely keen per-pallet economics, because your pallet shares every leg with a lot of other people's. It also produces a fixed cadence you do not control: networks run to set service tiers with depot cut-offs, and delivery is normally kerbside on a tail lift. None of that is dishonest or inferior. It is simply a system built for volume and price, not for a consignment that has to be in Coventry by 15:00 today. Dedicated full load: what you are actually buying
A dedicated vehicle is the opposite design. One vehicle is assigned to your job, it carries your consignment only, and it runs from your collection point to your delivery point. No shared loads. No consolidation. No sorting hub. No overnight trunking. The freight is handled twice — once on, once off.
That is why dedicated work can be run as a same-day service and network freight cannot. There is no depot cut-off to miss, no sort to make, no second trunk to wait for. Transit is drive time plus loading, and the live variables are traffic and access rather than somebody else's timetable.
It also means the vehicle is yours for the duration. If the consignee's booking-in window moves, you are talking to one driver, not raising a query with a hub. Part load: the middle option, and where the time goes
Part load — groupage — sits between the two. Your freight shares a trailer with one or two other consignments heading broadly the same way. There is no hub sort, so it avoids the worst of the network handling, but you inherit somebody else's route.
The cost of that is time, and it rarely shows up at quote stage. Your pallets may load first and come off last. The vehicle may wait while the other consignor's forklift driver finishes his lunch. A booking-in slot at the other consignee's site can move your delivery by half a day. You are also sharing the deck with somebody else's freight, which matters if yours is tall, top-heavy or awkward to strap.
Part load is a sound commercial choice when the load is too big for a network pallet, the date has slack in it, and nobody is standing idle waiting for it. For genuinely urgent freight it tends to give away most of the speed advantage of a dedicated vehicle while keeping the coordination overhead of a shared one. If a deadline is attached, the middle option is usually the wrong option.
Right-sizing the vehicle: the pallet counts that matter
The commonest expensive mistake in dedicated freight is booking the wrong-sized vehicle. Dedicated does not mean articulated. It means the vehicle is yours — and the smallest vehicle that safely carries the load is the cheapest way to run it.

• Small van — boxed parts, a single item, nothing pallet-scale.
• Luton with tail lift — around 6 pallets, and the tail lift earns its keep when there is no forklift at either end.
• 7.5-tonne — around 10 pallets, and it will get into yards and city centres an artic cannot.

• 13.6m articulated lorry — a full 26 pallets, up to roughly 26,000kg.
Check weight and volume separately. Dense freight — steel, castings, liquids, tiles — hits the weight ceiling long before the deck fills, so 26 pallet spaces are irrelevant if you weigh out at 18. Bulky, light freight does the reverse. And confirm access at both ends before you book: kerbside tail lift, forklift or overhead crane changes which vehicle is even usable, and a 13.6m trailer that cannot turn into the yard is no use to anybody.
The cost comparison buyers get wrong
Compare like with like. Take the dedicated quote, divide it by the number of pallets, and put that against the network's per-pallet rate. At one or two pallets the network will almost always win on carriage cost. As the pallet count rises, the dedicated per-pallet figure falls away while the network figure keeps stacking up — and somewhere in the middle they cross. Where that crossover sits depends on distance, vehicle size and where the vehicle has to come from, which is why an honest quote needs your postcodes, not a rate card.
Then add the cost that never appears on the freight invoice. An hour of a stopped production line, a site crew standing about, an engineer waiting on a part, a customer's shutdown running over — those numbers are usually far larger than the gap between two carriage prices. A modest saving on carriage that puts an expensive stoppage at risk is not a saving; it is an unpriced bet.
Dedicated is not always the right answer. It is the right answer when being late is expensive, and the wrong answer when it genuinely is not.
Handling, damage and what you can actually see
Every handling event is a chance for something to be dropped, crushed, mis-scanned or routed to the wrong spoke. Networks manage this carefully — it is their core competence — but the exposure is structural: seven touches carry more risk than two, and hub loading stacks pallets to make cubic sense of a trailer, not to suit your consignment.
So the freight itself should shape the decision. Non-stackable, fragile, tall, top-heavy, uncrated, high-value, temperature-sensitive or over-length freight tends to attract surcharges in a network, gets refused outright, or quietly ends up underneath somebody else's pallet. On a dedicated vehicle it is loaded once, strapped the way you want it, and nothing goes on top of it.
Visibility splits the same way. Network tracking is a series of scan events at fixed points — informative, but retrospective. On a dedicated job you can see where the vehicle is now, and the driver is contactable. When a customer rings for an ETA, "it left the hub at 03:40" is a very different answer from "he is 40 minutes out, junction 15". Chain of custody stays with one driver, start to finish.
When each is genuinely the right call — and how to brief it
Use a pallet network when the freight is standard, stackable, a handful of pallets, and the date has slack in it. It is the cheapest sensible way to move a pallet that can wait.
Use a part load when the consignment is too large for network pallets, is not urgent, and neither end is waiting on it.
Use a dedicated full load when a deadline is attached, when the freight is awkward or high-value, when a fixed collection or delivery window has to be hit, when the consignment fills a vehicle anyway, or when the delivery falls out of hours.
